drawing an Environment in PS.

In this tutorial I will paint an environment. This is not one of the newbie tutorials so it is better for you to have a tablet to this one. So put your tablet in front of you & let's get started.

environment

I usually paint is standard 4:3 aspect ratio but you should know that most of the environments - specially for the movie industry should be done in 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio.

environment

I'm beginning with a rough value sketch to define the mass and the areas that will stay on foreground and background.

environment

The brush settings vary from without any options to this:

So I'm still dropping some values. Tip: it is good to fill the background with neutral (gray) in the beginning.

environment

As you can see some objects begin to appear. They are done with basic flat brush (palette knife).

environment

Correcting the value: Tip: Flip the image horizontally to see all the mistakes you've made.

environment

Now let's add a little atmosphere. Choose soft brush and apply there setting on opacity and flow.

environment

Do this o a new layer to be able to expose some areas.

Let's refine some elements.

So our black and white sketch is finished now. Looks quite ok; it is time to fill all this with color.

Create a new layer and choose the mode of the layer - Pin light. Begin to color.

I'm still using this brush.

environment

I've defined my color gamma now let's draw some details.

Some leaves here and there:

Rock details: I'm using this brush for details.

Now it seems the picture needs a little bit of rain: how I solved this problem: I've created a dot brush with scatter parameters set to pen pressure and then applied motion blur.

environment

Little surface lights.

Some details on the back: and I think this is it. This was done in about 2 hours from scratch. So I hope you enjoyed this one.

And for the final we have small details (highlighted - specula light) like little drops of rain on the leaves, sparkles - dust if you want).

And if you want to have a finished artwork you have to do all the little things there - you definitely must "touch" every raindrop there- and as you can see I've done only the "marks"(if you look closely) for maybe to complete it later. So and this completes our tuition on digital art.
